Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center volunteer Marsha Carlson was named “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” and volunteer Shirley Weitkum was honored as “Sweetheart Volunteer of the Year” at the hospital’s 37th Annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon. The event recognized the hospital’s 106 volunteers, including 30 college students, for their years of dedicated service.
Scott Heinichin, a biology major at Cal Poly, was awarded the Volunteer Auxiliary Student Scholarship. In addition to his volunteer duties at the hospital, Heinichin is an avid tri-athlete, placing third in his age group at the recent UCSD Tritonman Triathlon. Heinichin plans to combine his love of exercise and medicine and pursue a career in physical therapy.
The Volunteer of the Year is selected each year by a committee of the volunteers. The Sweetheart Volunteer of the Year is selected annually by the volunteer organization’s president and the student scholarship is chosen from a competitive pool of applicants.
Last year Sierra Vista volunteers contributed 23,254 hours to the hospital in a variety of services. In addition, they donated $21,500 to local scholarships and non-profit organizations.
