Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center will be awarded the Organ Donation Medal of Honor, issued by the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, at the fourth annual National Learning Congress and Medal of Honor ceremony in Nashville October 23 and 24.

Sierra Vista will receive the award for achieving an outstanding organ donation rate. The San Luis Obispo-based hospital will be one of only 12 hospitals of the 160 in the California Transplant Donor Network (CTDN) service area and only 402 other hospitals nationwide for meeting or exceeding a donation rate of 75 percent.

In a letter from Elizabeth M. Duke, administrator for the US Department of Health and Human Services, she stated, “On behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA), I would like to congratulate your hospital for earning HRSA’s Organ Donation Medal of Honor. This award has been given annually since 2005 to hospitals that have achieved and sustained a donation rate of 75 percent or more of eligible donors.”
